An importance of having a regular newsletter or bulletin aimed at information exchange between members of the WGW became apparent since the moment of the group creation in 1987. Alexander Ya. Kondratiev, working then in the Institute of Biological Problems of the North in Magadan, was the person who has initiated such edition using a financial support of the institute and published first 3 issues of the bulletin, which became annual and was titled “Information of the Working Group on Waders”. The following 3 issues were also published with help of the institutes of the Academy of Sciences: in Novosibirsk (Alexander K. Yurlov) and Ekaterinburg (Vadim K. Ryabitsev). The issue of 1993 was sponsored by members of the International Wader Study Group who attended the WSG Conference in Odessa. Since 1994 publication of the bulletin took place in Moscow mostly with funds from cooperation program between National Park Schlezvig-Holstein Wattenmeer and State Nature Reserve “Taimyrsky”. At the same time the publication title has slightly changed to become “Information Materials of the Working Group on Waders” and numeration of issues was introduced.
Having been published usually just before summer field seasons issues of the “Information Materials of the WGW” (IM WGW) summarized findings of ornithologists during the previous season, spread information about new projects, outstanding records, descriptions of new research methods, impressions from conferences and other forums and reviews of the most important publications related to waders. Information nature of the content has been always emphasized by editors suggesting to publish scientific papers in other specialized journals and volumes of collected papers. Exceptions are only made for short scientific notes about the most rare species belonging to national Red Data books and outstanding faunistic records which should be made known to other specialists on waders as soon as possible.
Collection of articles for IM WGW is coordinated by bulletin editor (currently – Tatiana Sviridova) with a support from Executive Committee members residing in Moscow. The IM WGW are distributed among members of the group.
